This website contains my top 3 picks for the best games on steam, being Hollow Knight, Subnautica, and Undertale. I will be going over the gameplay, story, graphics, soundtrack, difficulty, and pricing. There is no particular order to this list, as I consider each game to be equal to the others.
Hollow Knight has a pretty simple control scheme, at first only being walking, attacking, healing, and jumping. But as you progress through the game you unlock different abilities like charged attacks, dashes, wall climbing, and spells. The way these are introduced is well done as well, preventing newer players from getting overwhelmed by the options. Though, as this is a metroidvania, it does require a bit of backtracking to progress, and at times it makes the game feel long.
Story
The story of Hollow Knight is pretty simple. It follows the adventure of the Knight in their decent into Hollownest, a ruined kingdom beneath the surface of the world. As you explore the various parts of Hollownest, you learn the truth as to what happened. There are 5 main endings, as well as a secret ending you can unlock by completing a certain quest. Each
Graphics
Hollow Knight has a simple, yet charming art style for it's characters, with most of them having simple features. The world is drawn with much more detail, making it worth exploring.
Soundtrack
One of the best things about Hollow Knight is it's soundtrack. It has some of the most beautiful soundracks in all of gaming, with each track meshing well with the gameplay. Below is a sample of the track, City of Tears.
Difficulty
One of the biggest parts of Hollow Knight are it's boss fights. While they start off fairly easy, they eventually become incredibly challenging, and downright impossible for some people. And unfortunately, one of the game's endings are locked behind the hardest fights in the game, the Pantheon, which many people are upset about.
Pricing
Sitting at $15 on steam, it's well worth it's price. It provides hours of enjoyable gameplay, a beautiful soundtrack, and an enticing story, and is overall just a good experience.
Subnautica puts you alone in a seemingly endless ocean with the sole goal of surviving. At first all you can do is grab resources and swim, but as you progress you unlock various tools and vehicles to aid you in your survival.
Story
You play as Riley, a janitor aboard the Aurora. The Aurora was tasked with building a phasegate to expand the controlled space of Alterra, the corporation funding this mission. However, upon trying to land at Planet 4546B, the Aurora gets shot down by a planetary defense system, leading to the start of the game. As you explore the planet, you are able to learn what happened to the other crew members, as well as a previous group of survivors. And eventually, you end up learning why the planet had a defense system and disable it to escape.
Graphics
Subnautica has incredibly beautiful graphics. They're able to make you "wow" while exploring the world, and they add to the fear factor perfectly. While swimming you can only see so far ahead of you, and this effect gets stronger the deeper you go, greatly empowering that fear of what could be lurking out there.
Jellyshroom Cave
Soundtrack
The soundtrack is pretty decent, it works perfectly with the game. It works well in conjunction with the graphics, as you'll sometimes hear creatures you cannot see, making that fear all the more real.
Difficulty
Most of Subnautica's difficulty stems from a lack of knowledge, so as you learn more the game becomes easier. You learn the behavior, territory, and danger level of the creatures and how you can avoid becoming their lunch through observation.
Pricing
With it's full price being $30, and it frequently going on sale for as low as $10, it's definitely a steal. It's gameplay never gets old, so it's easy to play for hours on end without getting bored.
Undertale's gameplay is fairly simple, but unique. It's a top down rpg with a sparing mechanic, allowing you to avoid fighting the Monsters you encounter. Here's a review by IGN that I feel explains Undertale perfectly.
Story
The story of Undertale follows Frisk in their journey through the Underground in an attempt to escape. Frisk falls into the Underground, where the Monster race was sealed long ago. Throughout your journey you'll meet many different Monsters and you'll have to choose whether or not to spare them. This choice will impact the ending based on who you spare and who you kill, as well as your level.
Graphics
The graphics aren't anything special. The game uses pixelated sprites and textures, and it uses them well.
Soundtrack
Undertale's soundtrack really sets it apart from most other games. It fits the environment perfectly and overall has some of the best music I've heard.
Difficulty
Undertale isn't too difficult if you play one of the normal routes, but if you do the genocide route you'll be faced with the hardest bosses in the game.
Pricing
Undertale is $10 at full price and will occasionally go on sale for as low as $3. With it's many different routes and fun gameplay, you can easily play it for many hours.
